“Virtual Trip to the Mishkan Museum in Israel to see Masterpieces Curated by Avi Lubin”

Avi Lubin is the chief curator of the museum and acclaimed international curator and critic. The exhibition features nearly 300 works by 47 Israeli artists who reenvision iconic masterpieces from Western art history—from the Italian Renaissance to Picasso—through the lens of Israel’s unique political, social, and artistic landscape.

Masterpieces weave together two narratives: the legacy of Western art and the evolution of Israeli art. The works on display challenge distinctions between original and copy, local and global, center and periphery. Amid a complex political moment, this exhibition invites viewers to reconsider the meaning of “masterpiece” and the power of reinterpretation.

A virtual Tour of the Mishkan Museum of Art at Kibbutz Ein Harod, Israel.

Founded in 1937, the brainchild of Israeli artist and kibbutz member Haim Atar. The Mishkan was established in the heart of the kibbutz community. Its founders believed that art, culture, knowledge, and understanding were essential. Today, the Mishkan is a respected museum and leading cultural center for local, national, and international artists. The museum houses a large collection of Jewish art from the late 19th and early 20th century and boasts an extensive collection of Judaica and Israeli art. Its structure has inspired some of the 20th century’s most iconic buildings. In this virtual tour we will explore the Mishkan’s current exhibit “TISH – Shabbat Tablescapes” with Judaica curator Dvora Liss and discover its relevance to the challenging times we are living in. We will also be joined by senior educator Tanya Fredman who will take us behind the scenes in the educational and communal programs for all ages which provide resilience and hope to Israeli Society.

Associate Professor Hannah Pollin-Galay of Tel Aviv University joined us for an eye-opening exploration of how language can bear witness to history’s darkest moments. In her groundbreaking new book, Occupied Words: What the Holocaust Did to Yiddish (University of Pennsylvania Press, September 2024), Pollin-Galay introduces us to “Khurbn Yiddish”—the Yiddish of the Holocaust—revealing how Jews, amidst brutality and dehumanization, transformed their language to describe the unimaginable.
